There’s nothing like a trip to the beach or dip in the pool on a hot summer day. You’ve got everything packed and ready to go: Cooler, sunscreen, towels, snacks, chairs, beach hat…Should you bring your diamonds to the beach? Leaving your engagement ring or your diamond studs behind can feel like you’re leaving undressed but it might be beneficial for you to leave your diamonds at home this time! Let’s get into some summer diamond care and find out if you should wear your diamonds during the summer.

Going into the ocean with your diamond ring can be a bad idea for a few reasons. One of them being that if your ring is loose at all, it can slide off your finger underneath the water without you realizing! Even if your ring fits perfectly, our fingers can actually change sizes slightly throughout the day depending on our body temperature. Fingers can shrink in the cold allowing for some extra wiggle room and for your ring to slip off in the ocean. Even if you do hold on to your ring tightly under there, the salt water exposure can dull the stones in your diamonds altering their shiny appearance. Ocean water can also corrode certain metals so depending on what your ring is made of, you might want to swim without your jewelry this summer!

If you’re not planning on swimming, you might not be worried about your diamonds getting lost in the ocean, however, sand can also effect our diamonds. You know that feeling when you get home from the beach, and there’s sand everywhere? Well, the same is true for our rings. The sand can work its way in between the stones and the setting which can loosen your diamond. The sand can also scrape against your diamond jewelry resulting in scratches or dulling. If you can avoid wearing your diamond jewelry in the ocean or around the sand, you definitely should.
